The death of the West

Of the thirty countries with membership in the OECD at the beginning of the 21st century, all but two had total female fertility rates under 2.1. This number - 2.1 - is required in order to stabilize the population at its current level.

The exceptions were Turkey and Mexico.

Thirteen OECD countries had fertility rates below 1.5

We've been here before. The outcome was the Dark Ages. After a lapse of just 1300 or 1400 years, you can get back to where you were before.

Problem ahead. But some point to evidence that advances in development may reverse fertility declines.
