There is a strong case for the fact that women had control of children ie single parenting was the norm. The model wasn't working: women are now compelled to work (or at least benefit claimants and the poor are). Children need a safe place where they are loved. However that is achieved.RenterGirlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12556830109922784321noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2948538160252327076.post-77711331317218274252012-02-13T13:22:44.513+00:002012-02-13T13:22:44.513+00:00"When that happens, who knows; Britain might ..."When that happens, who knows; Britain might need to invent a social institution where fathers and mothers live together and earn money to provide for their children and when those children grow up, they take care of their parents. This is one...Droog - Yes. There was a golden age.

This is one of the truth reversals I was talking about in a previous post.

No-one is saying that things were perfect.

The reason we left that system in the past was a hatred of paternalism by a rebelious youth without a cause - the baby boomer generation.

Speak to most and they will say that things have got a lot worse. Those in charge that disagree lie and tell us how shit Britain used to be.

Well in my 47 years alone I can tell you it's gone down hill a long way in many respects. About the only thing that's got better is the food and the music, but I'd gladly trade that to turn the clock back and return us to the right track.Electro-Kevinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18073103431166273080noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2948538160252327076.post-75230772886316825232012-02-12T14:24:46.645+00:002012-02-12T14:24:46.645+00:00We never should have come down from the trees. The welfare state killed herd-like poly-amorous nomadic hunter-gatherer societies.

If there is a way to re-strengthen the stability provided by two-parent nuclear families without bringing back the abuses committed when we lacked divorce, labour equality laws and social services then I'm all for it. But if we're talking about the abuses and poor quality of living endured by many in these hallowed nuclear families then I'm out. Patrick Stewart is right, without some of these welfare systems we may revert to a time when women and children suffered more.

There was never a golden age, just a different flavour of crud that had to be eaten. Today's crud shows up neatly in national budget and crime stats. The memory of yesterday's crud is not as clear. Turning back is not an option; there's a reason we left that system in the past.drooghttp://gravatar.com/droogthegwirenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2948538160252327076.post-26918653567803393222012-02-12T11:16:33.693+00:002012-02-12T11:16:33.693+00:00Its a one off event. Natural selection will see to the removal of the genes - which I harbour - that have no desire to procreate. We have too big a population of humans anyway for this planet. If over a hundred or so years we end up with a population of 3 billions then that will be great for all the other flora and fauna which we share earth with. I know you frequently comment on this child deficiency problem, and I frequently take the opposite view, but I really do think it is cause for optimism, not pessimism. Whether governments should be encouraging immigration in an effort to keep the economy growing instead of trying to manage the change is quite another issue.david bnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2948538160252327076.post-91078028987388395472012-02-12T01:27:45.726+00:002012-02-12T01:27:45.726+00:00Cheer up: the people retiring now are the ones who...Cheer up: the people retiring now are the ones who discovered that sexual intercourse was invented in 1963. They also did their shagging around before AIDS and therefore didn't use condoms much. So they will be carrying an infective burden that will knock them off early - I predict a decline in life span starting in the next few years.
