I think you judge a political project's success by the sort of person it creates. The Nazis created blond physically impressive people. Post war USA produced the healthy and handsome people we saw in the surf movies. Prosperous post-war Europe bred the Euro-hottie: a sleek woman with a bomb-shell physique (think Catherine Deneuve). And New Labour Britain? Obese, flatulant, diabetic, frumpy or tarty, out-of-shape, alcoholic, depressed people. Enough said.
The claim that the population is getting too fat and is doomed to die young has coincided pretty well with the claim that we're all living too long and are going to bankrupt our pension schemes. Which?
Interesting alice; it is the new uk bubble starting: obese children will grow to be well, disabled adults which will suck the system dry. How do you finish this bubble? By finishing with inequalities, increase education, taxing fatty foods, "nanny state" again: strong encouragement to exercise more, watch less TV.... oh noo! it's labour again...

There is definitely a child theme of this blog - got bored with the financial crisis Alice?

D, you miss the nightmare scenario, fat, unhealthy people who can't work, live longer and are a 'burden on the NHS'.
But it's not the one they try to scare us with. Clearly there's a fake charity opportunity here.
It started in America!!!
Wimpy bars; McD's; Pizza Hut; Coke/Pepsi; Wendy's etc etc
So overall they weigh the same? Result!
Any chance of just "fewer" children rather than "less"? Or perhaps less food for the fewer children? :-)
What formertory said!
