After playing his disgraceful part in the mayhem that now passes for UK monetary policy, Blanchflower gets a CBE
The Bank of England official who predicted the recession has been made a CBE in the Birthday Honours list. David Blanchflower, who has recently retired from the Bank's rate-setting Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), said he was "very pleased" with the award.
Remind me, why do we give out these useless and utterly discredited awards? Why would anyone ever accept one?

That's easy to answer. All these people lust after the recognition that comes with a title. Its embedded into our psyche, which is no bad thing, except that nowadays they are as you say, wholly discredited.

We give them out because they're cheap, people accept them because they still confer some status, (not as much as they once did but some is better than none).
